Things to Do in Budapest
Whether you're here for a long weekend, a week, or a few days, there are so many things to do in Budapest. From exploring the spooky tunnels underneath Buda Castle to enjoying a coffee break at an independent cafe, this city is as enticing as it is historic and trendy.
Budapest's flat neighborhoods are made for walking, but if you want to move more quickly around town, you can hop on one of the iconic yellow trams above ground or the rapid transit system below. You can also take a river cruise on the Danube, where the Chain Bridge, the Hungarian Parliament Building, and Margaret Island appear within arm's reach.
The Budapest Museum of Fine Arts (Szepmuveszeti Muzeum) is a must-see for art lovers, featuring works by Hungary's top artists. These include Karoly Ferenczy, who led an impressionist art colony in Nagybanya; the Nyolcak art group that mirrored fauvism and expressionism; surrealist and proto-abstract artist Lajos Vajda; and others. The museum is located in a neoclassical palace and is free to visit.
Buda Castle is a stunning sight to behold. The neo-Gothic structure was built in the 18th century to celebrate 1,000 years of independence, and it's home to several historical landmarks. The most popular activity here is a guided tour, but you can also wander the halls and admire the frescoes inside.
The spooky tunnels underneath Buda Palace are one of the more unique things to do in the city, as they were once used to imprison prisoners, including Vlad Tepes (aka Count Dracula). These dark and smoky tunnels are now open for tours and are a bit of a thrill to explore—but be warned, it can get very cold and claustrophobic down there.
Budapest's burgeoning coffee scene makes for a welcome respite during any walk through the streets, and you can sample local roasters at one of the many cafes and coffee shops. You can even watch a barista grind, brew, and decorate foam art at some of the more popular places.
Wine has always been essential to Hungary, and you can try native grapes at one of the city's top wine bars. You'll find a wide variety of wines here, from furmint and harslevelu to kekfrankos/Blaufrankisch and kadarka. If you're not quite ready to buy a bottle, you can sample small-batch varieties at one of the many wine bars that offer samples.
